COSEWIC May 2020 Business Meeting

Due to COVID-19, COSEWIC was not able to have its regular face-to-face meeting this spring. Instead, the committee held conference calls for three half-days from May 4-6, 2020 to discuss a range of business items, including Species Specialist Subcommittee Co-chair and Non-government Science Member nominations to the committee. A teleconference format was not suitable for assessing the status of wildlife species. Our next regularly-scheduled meeting will be November 2020, in Ottawa, where we hope to assess the status of approximately 40 wildlife species. If the pandemic prevents the committee from meeting in person, we will explore options for the use of virtual meetings to do these assessments instead. The COSEWIC status reports that are currently in progress can be found at (

About us

The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) is an independent advisory panel to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada that meets twice a year to assess the status of wildlife species at risk of extinction. Members are wildlife biology experts from academia, government, non-governmental organizations and the private sector responsible for designating wildlife species in danger of disappearing from Canada.
